One Helmet. Exceptional Results.
Over 98% of babies complete their cranial remolding treatment in a single helmet.
✓ Advanced 3D scanning
✓ Routine growth monitoring
✓ Personalized treatment
The STARband is the most commonly prescribed FDA-cleared cranial remold orthosis in the world.
It has been used to treat more than 600,000 babies since 2001. At Orthotic and Prosthetic Lab - we currently utilize two different STAR family designs.
The St. Louis Band
The St. Louis Band is the most commonly prescribed cranial remolding orthosis in the St. Louis region and has helped thousands of infants achieve improved head shape through safe, effective treatment. Manufactured by Orthomerica exclusively for use by the O&P Labs Cranial Care team, each band is custom designed to meet the unique needs of your child's growth and development.
The St. Louis Band features an overlap side-opening design with a lightweight, low-profile shell and a soft ¼-inch to 3/8-inch foam liner for comfort. Its secure hook-and-loop closure allows for easy daily use while maintaining a consistent fit throughout treatment.
Using precise measurements and individualized treatment planning, each helmet is carefully fabricated to gently guide your baby's natural head growth. The band provides contact over the rounded areas of the skull while creating space in the flattened regions, allowing growth to occur where it is needed most. This process gradually improves symmetry as your baby grows.
One of the key advantages of the St. Louis Band is its full-coverage design. By providing comprehensive contact and control around the skull, the helmet helps maximize correction and treatment efficiency. Combined with regular follow-up visits and expert adjustments from our experienced clinicians, the St. Louis Band continues to deliver the exceptional outcomes that families and physicians have trusted for decades.
STARband 3D
The STARband™ 3D is an advanced cranial remolding orthosis designed using state-of-the-art digital scanning and fabrication technology. Each helmet is custom made for your child's unique head shape, providing a precise fit that supports optimal correction throughout treatment.
The STARband™ 3D features a lightweight design, enhanced ventilation, and a comfortable foam liner to help keep babies cool and comfortable during wear. Using detailed 3D imaging, our Cranial Care team can accurately monitor growth and make treatment decisions based on precise measurements at every visit.
Like all cranial remolding orthoses, the STARband™ 3D works by gently directing natural head growth—providing contact over prominent areas while allowing room for growth in flattened regions of the skull. Its modern design, improved airflow, and advanced fabrication process help deliver effective treatment while fitting seamlessly into your baby's daily routine.
How a Cranial Remolding Orthosis works
A cranial remolding orthosis (i.e. helmet) does not squeeze or force your baby's head into a new shape. Instead, it gently guides your baby's natural head growth into a more symmetrical shape during the period of most rapid brain and skull development.
Each helmet is custom made using a precise 3D scan of your baby's head. The inside of the helmet is carefully designed with two important features:
Gentle contact is made over the areas of the head that are already rounded or more prominent.
Extra space is created over the flattened areas where additional growth is needed.
As your baby's head naturally grows, the helmet directs that growth into the open spaces, gradually improving head shape and symmetry over time. Because an infant's skull is still soft and growing rapidly during the first year of life, this process is both gentle and effective.
A Personalized Treatment Journey
No two babies have the same head shape, which is why every cranial remolding helmet is custom fabricated for each child. Throughout treatment, you'll return for regular follow-up appointments where our clinicians monitor growth, make adjustments to the helmet, and ensure treatment stays on track.
Most babies wear their helmet 23 hours a day, removing it only for bathing, cleaning, and skin checks. As your baby continues to grow, the helmet continues to guide that growth until the desired correction is achieved.
Growth Does the Work
The helmet doesn't reshape the skull through pressure—it simply creates the ideal environment for your baby's natural growth to do the work. That's why starting treatment during the months of fastest head growth often leads to the best results.
