Craniosynostosis.
Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the joints (called sutures) between the bones of a baby's skull close too early. Because an infant's brain grows rapidly during the first years of life, these sutures normally remain open to allow the skull to expand as the brain develops.
When a suture closes prematurely, the skull cannot grow normally in that area. Instead, growth is redirected to the remaining open sutures, resulting in an abnormal head shape. Depending on which suture is affected, craniosynostosis can cause different skull shapes and, in some cases, increased pressure inside the skull.
Unlike positional plagiocephaly, craniosynostosis does not improve with repositioning or physical therapy and typically requires evaluation by a craniofacial surgeon or pediatric neurosurgeon. Many children undergo surgery to correct the fused suture and allow for normal brain and skull growth.
Following minimally invasive surgery, most children benefit from post-operative cranial remolding helmet therapy to help guide head shape as the skull continues to heal and grow. At O&P Lab, our certified orthotists work closely with your child's surgical team to provide customized cranial remolding helmets and monitor progress throughout treatment.
Our goal is to help every child achieve the best possible outcome through compassionate care, advanced technology, and close collaboration with your healthcare team.
